I originally had a Gopher server running on my home server. Definitely retro, but honestly, it didn't do much for me. Then in the process I discovered Gemini protocol. Kinda the same as Gopher, but a little more modern.
Yeah, I like it. This is what is known as "the small web." It is a simple, stripped-down way to browse the internet that focuses on plain text, privacy, and speed; no ads, tracking, or heavy scripts and is often accessed with specialized browsers like Kristall or Lagrange. It’s part of the broader idea of the “small web,” a quieter, more personal version of the internet where individuals create and share content without algorithms or big platforms. Instead of endless feeds and noise, it feels more like exploring a collection of personal sites and ideas, discovered through links and curiosity rather than search engines.
I like this idea. It aligns with a lot that I do and the BBS culture I started with. I will be creating a landing page on the web for folks to access and show the very simple steps to connect to my site.
It is located at gemini://gemini.njb1966.com if you feel enterprising and want to figure out beforehand how to connect!
